The Road To Hell - Chris Rea
 
- Part I - 
Stood still on a highway
I saw a woman by the side of the road
With a face that I knew like my own
reflected in my window.
Well she walked up to my quarterlight
and she bent down real slow
A fearful pressure paralysed me in my shadows.
She said: Son what are you doing here?
My fear for you has turned me in my grave.
I said: Mama I come to the valley
Of the rich myself to sell.
She said: Son this is the road to hell.
On your journey
Cross the wilderness from the desert to the well
You have strayed upon the motorway to hell

 - Part II - 
Well I'm standing by a river
But the water doesn't flow
It boils with every poison you can think of
And I'm underneath the streetlight 
But the light of joy I know
Scared beyond belief way down in the shadows
And the perverted fear of violence
Chokes the smile on every face
And common sense is ringing out the bell
This ain't no technological breakdown
Oh no, this is the road to hell
And all the roads jam up with credit
And there's nothing you can do
It's all just bits of paper flying away from you
Oh look out world, take a good look
What comes down here
You must learn this lesson fast and learn it well
This ain't no upwardly mobile freeway
Oh no, this is the road
Said this is the road
This is the road to Hell
 

 
고속도로에 멈추어 서있는 동안 
길가에 서있는 한 여인을 보았어요
마치 차창에 비춰진 내모습과 같이 낯익은 얼굴의 여인이었어요
그녀는 사이드 미러 쪽으로 걸어와서 천천히 몸을 굽혔어요
 나는 그림자속에서 두려운 압박감에  온몸이 마비되었어요
그녀는 이렇게 말했어요 "아들아 어디로 가고있는 거니
나는 네가 걱정이되어서 무덤에서 돌아왔단다"
난 이렇게 대답했어요
"어머니 나는 돈을 벌기위해  부가 쌓인 골짜기로 가고 있어요"
그녀는 말했어요 "아들아  이건 지옥으로 가는 길이란다
사막속에서 옥토를 찾아  거친길을 헤메는 도중에
넌 그만 길을잃고 지옥으로가는 길로 들어서고 만것이야"
나는 강가에 서있었지만 물은 흐르지 않았고
상상을 초월한 독극물들로 들끓고 있었어
난 도시의 불빛아래 있었지만  내가 알고있던 즐거움의 불빛은
 저 깊은 그림자 너머로 믿음을 내 ?아 버렸지
폭력에대한  불안감으로 사람들의 얼굴에는 미소가 사라져 버렸어
그리고 상식이 통하던 때는 이미 지나가 버렸지
이건 기술적논리로 해결될 문제가 아니야  이건 지옥으로 가는 길이야
모든 믿음의 길은 꽉 막혀있으나  너는 어찌해볼 도리가 없어
그건 모두가 네손에서 이미 날아가 버린 종이쪽지에 불과한거야
세상을  똑똑히 바라봐  네 앞으로 다가오는것이 무었인가
너는 이 교훈을 빨리 배우고 잘 익혀두어야 한다
이길은 결코 천상으로 가는 길이 아니란다.
이길은 말이야, 이길은 지옥으로 가는 길이란다
